Use OpenRouter for Character Chat in Soliloquy
Connect your OpenRouter API key to Soliloquy, choose a model, test the connection, and start a character chat with clear costs and data handling.
You can use your own OpenRouter API key for text conversations in Soliloquy Live. Pick a character from Soliloquy's character market; no character-card import is required. This guide covers the browser app and uses the English interface labels.
You can also view, edit and delete the conversation's saved memories. The memory controls and worked example show how to correct a stored fact; editing memory does not guarantee that a later reply will recall it correctly.
Prepare your key and model
Sign in to OpenRouter's API key settings and create a key for this connection. Keep it private and set a spending limit with the provider.
Choose a text-chat model from the OpenRouter model catalog. Copy its exact model ID, including the provider prefix. For example, Llama 3.3 70B Instruct uses meta-llama/llama-3.3-70b-instruct. This is an ID example, not a promise about response quality or free access. Check the model's current pricing and availability before using it.
Connect OpenRouter
- Sign in to Soliloquy and open Membership. At the bottom, find the Bring your own API key note and select Settings. This switches your account to Your own key (BYOK) mode and opens Settings.
- Choose Models & images and expand Model connection.
- Set Provider to OpenRouter and paste your key into API Key.
- Enter the exact model ID in Model. The OpenRouter preset supplies the endpoint, so there is no Base URL to enter.
- Select Test connection and wait for Connected. Provider charges may apply to the connection test.
- Select Save. Saving tests the current values again and only stores them if that test succeeds. The connection row then shows OpenRouter · Configured.
Try a character conversation
Return to the character market, open a character, and select Start chatting. The author must allow chatting with your own key. Market access is a separate requirement: a remaining points balance or a qualifying past top-up can grant access to other creators' characters. Your own characters do not need that market access.
Try this fictional message without adding personal information:
We are waiting for a train that is ten minutes late. Stay in character, tell me what you notice on the platform, and ask me one question. Leave my actions and dialogue for me to write.
Costs and data handling
In BYOK mode, Short and Medium text replies use zero Soliloquy platform credits. Long replies cost 1 platform credit per turn. OpenRouter usage is billed separately. A chat turn can make multiple model requests using your key, so the provider charge may cover more than one request.
Your text-model key is saved locally in this browser, but connection tests and chat requests pass through Soliloquy's server, which uses the key to call the provider. This is not an entirely local chat. Review the Privacy Policy and your provider's terms before sharing sensitive information.
If a test fails, follow the displayed error: check the key, exact model ID, model permissions, or provider balance. Changing those values requires another successful test before they can be saved.
